Today I'll show you some photos of
Coelogyne cristata - Snow Queen - Schneekönigin - Lumikuningatar.
I saw this exquisite orchid in The Winter Garden of the City of Helsinki.
It has plenty of odd 'bulbs' but the flowers are really beautiful.

In pots, the Coelogyne cristata - Snow Queen orchids require a lot of light, but not direct sunlight. They should be kept cooler than room temperature, between 16 and 18 °C (60.8 - 64.4 °F) during the day and 12 °C (53.6 °F) at night. In the summer, it is permissible to leave them outdoors in partial shade. But, if the temperature is too high, they will not bloom.
After the resting period, when Coelogyne cristata starts to grow again in the spring, it can be replanted in porous and fibrous material, such as pine bark, charcoal pieces and even a little sphagnum, which are all known to be favorable to the orchids. But it should not be planted until the pot is filled with roots. Propagation is by division but it can be difficult to manage.
Lumikuningatar oli yksi ensimmäisistä Suomeen saapuneista trooppisista orkideoista 1800-luvun lopulla. Silloin sitä kasvatettiin kartanoiden puulämmitteisissä saleissa, joissa lämpötila laski varsinkin talvella alhaiseksi. Tämä sopi kasville hyvin, sillä se vaatii talvella viileän lepoajan kukkiakseen. 1800- ja 1900-luvun vaihde oli kasvin suosion huippuaikaa myös kansainvälisesti, jonka jälkeen sen suosio on vähentynyt osittain keskuslämmityksen yleistymisen takia, mikä on pilannut edellytykset kasvin kukkimiselle monissa asunnoissa. Mikäli tarvittavat olosuhteet vain pystytään järjestämään, ei lumikuningatar ole erityisen vaikea kasvatettava.
